Exploration Through the Arts

Young Explorers is our multidisciplinary arts education program inspiring Austin-area grade school students to explore the world around them, using arts and music as entry points for inquiry. The program provides instruction in different disciplines, including visual arts, music, and digital arts and technologies, guiding students to create their own works and culminating in a student showcase at the end of each semester.

The objectives of this program are to provide students with meaningful and memorable opportunities to explore different histories, perspectives, and cultural traditions–in Texas, across America, and around the globe.

Program Objectives

Accessibility

Provide meaningful and educational arts and cultural experiences to students in Austin’s underserved communities, particularly those from low-income families with limited access to these types of programs.

Awareness

Develop awareness of different histories, perspectives, and cultures and encourage young minds to think critically and empathize with diverse groups of people, including those who may have backgrounds different from their own.

Inclusion

Equip underserved youth with critical 21st-century knowledge and skills, using the arts as a platform to empower them as conscious and productive contributors both in digital society and in physical spaces and communities.

Program Impacts

Over the past three years, our Young Explorers program has developed into a year-round arts education initiative with seasonal public showcases featuring student work and expanded to include instruction in digital arts technologies and media. The program continues to emphasize accessibility for economically disadvantaged students, with 75% of participants identifying as low-income.
